This is the challenge for the month of March in the 52 Simple Ways to Create a Beautiful Space, the system for those of us who get overwhelmed with the big picture. It is a system that is broken down into small, doable steps. This is especially helpful for those of us with short attention spans.
For March, we are going to focus on the closet.
The closet area can get away from us so easily, and it can be overwhelming to tackle it. This is why I gave this area a whole month. And trust me, my closet is not that big. It’s just crammed with too much stuff. How can this even be when I never have anything to wear?
While I would love to pull it all out and start from scratch with a blank slate, I have a hard time finding a block of time large enough to pull it all out, make the necessary decisions and to put it all back, especially if I need the space where I have put it all while I’m doing this. We will rarely find time to drag it all out and start from scratch, not to mention the havoc it would wreak on my body to try to do it all in one day. This challenge is about taking small areas and work on it in less overwhelming bites. I love breaking all of these difficult projects down, but especially the closet. I get overwhelmed when I look at the whole thing. That is a lot to bite off. It is much more manageable when I only have to focus on ONE thing when I walk in there. No matter how much is coming at me, I only have one job that week.
If you need to order organizers to help you with this project, this is a great time to order storage, purse/shoe/scarf organizers, baskets, or anything else you might need to make your job easier.
When sorting through these things, be honest with yourself. If it needs to be mended or altered and you have not done it in five years, there is a really good chance that it is not going to happen. If it is worn, has holes, or is irreparable, throw it out. Its day has passed.
Before you walk into your closet, this would be a good time to set a goal. How many of these things would you like to keep? Or how many do you want to get rid of? Give yourself a number, a goal.
Here are our weekly challenges. While you are working on your designated area, if you see something that without thinking about it you know it needs to go, by all means, pull it out and throw it out.
- Purses and shoes
- Tops
- Bottoms
- Everything else
- Shelves, organize
This is one of my favorite quotes, and I definitely think we can apply this rule to our closets…
“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”
― William Morris
