One Word for the Year

As the new year approaches, this is a time that many of us are choosing our one word for the year. It is when we choose a word, one word, that is speaking to us, calling to us. Instead of focusing on too many things, it is a way of keeping one goal in front of us all year.  It could be a word in an area we would like to grow, a way we want to be, a life philosophy, or a goal.

I liked a lot of words last year. Yes, I know. That’s not how you do this. I just fell in love with them. I could not help myself.

Words like…

immerse

intentional

momentum

celebrate

show up

inhabit

While I focused at different times on the different words, I would have to say the underlying mood for this past year was about the words immerse and intentional. I feel like I made those words a focus for this past year and made progress in those areas. Those are great areas of focus for every year.

I am still not sure of my word for this year. The words right now that seems to be moving me are indomitable, unstoppable, words like those.

in·dom·i·ta·ble
inˈdämədəb(ə)l/
adjective
impossible to subdue or defeat.
“a woman of indomitable spirit”
synonyms: invincible, unconquerable, unbeatable, unassailable, invulnerable, unshakable, unsinkable; indefatigable, unyielding, unbending, stalwart, stout-hearted, lionhearted, strong-willed, strong-minded, steadfast, staunch, resolute, firm, determined, intransigent, inflexible, adamant; unflinching, courageous, brave, valiant, heroic, intrepid, fearless, plucky, gritty; impenetrable, impregnable; informal spunky, skookum

un·stop·pa·ble
ˌənˈstäpəb(ə)l/
adjective
impossible to stop or prevent.
“an unstoppable army”

Or maybe the word….fierce…

This is the year I will be stronger, braver, kinder & unstoppable. This year I will be fierce. -Unknown | Fierce Necklace - One Word Necklace by artofabeautifullife.com

These words are speaking to me right now. No matter how tough things are, we just cannot give up. Whether we are going through a crisis or working toward a goal, these are words you want to be….words that you will probably need to be. We cannot take our eyes off the ball. We must stay on course. We must not be moved by feelings or obstacles.

I love these words.

I am sure there will be others that find me, but those are the words that are speaking to me right now. I also love the word Shine. Don’t we all want to remember to shine…really shine?

Do you have a word for the year? Here are more one word choices that might speak to you…

Action, Appreciate, Believe, Bloom, Brave, Breathe, Celebrate, Confidence, Create, Faith, Fierce, Focus, Grace, Gratitude, Happy, Hope, Imagine, Immerse, Indomitable, Inhabit, Intentional, Joy, Kindness, Love, Momentum, Peace, Positive, Pray, Present, Rejoice, Shine, Show-up, Simplify, Soar, Thrive, Unstoppable, Unwritten, Visible

10 thoughts on “One Word for the Year”

  1. Great post. I forgot about the word for the year. Last year it was simplify. Which is wonderful and I thought I would use it again, but I have grown and I want a stronger word. Need to think about this one.
    Happy New Year, Topaz!

    • Oh, I love that word, Kathy. Now I want that one. Ha ha! But like you, I can’t go with that one this year. It’s not the year for it. But it is always in the back of my mind. Here’s to the years we can do more of that. I can’t wait to see what word you decide on for this year. I needed a strong one for this year, too. Happy New Year, to you, too, Kathy! May it be our best yet!

  2. i love the word “fierce” and many of the others you have mentioned. I tried to subconsciously use “grace” last year and still like that one. For the new year, I am loving “soar”. Thanks for the inspiration.

    • Oh, “grace” is a great word, Julie! I had someone mention that word yesterday when talking about the new year. Oh, that is funny you mention the word “soar”. I am working on a necklace design for that one this year. I love that word. See, this is my problem. I’m like a kid in a candy story when it comes to words. Ha ha!

  3. I haven’t ever done the word of the year thing. Hmmm. That’s something to think about. I love the word “SHINE”… that’s one of the reasons why I named my blog hop the SHINE Blog Hop. Shine embraces so much of what I want to do.

    Even though I don’t have a word, I have a motto:
“Live more, love more, give more, care more” because I’m certain that covers what Jesus calls me to do.

    Thanks for sharing.

Blessings to you for a very Happy New Year!
    xoxo

    • I just started this last year. I think of it as an underlying theme for my life. “SHINE” was actually a custom order, and the more I thought about it, the more I loved it. I am always saying things like “shine on” or “keep shining”. No matter what is going on around us, if we can still shine, we are spreading light. Wonderful motto, Jennifer! I am sure you are going to have a wonderful year! Happy New Year to you and yours, too! xo

  4. I love all your words, my friend!! They all touch me deeply, and inspire me to grab hold of life with every fiber of my heart. Truly.

I keep thinking of Perspective. And since I can’t get that word out of my head and my heart, I’m thinking that is the word God has chosen for me.

It’s all about perspective. Everything under the sun is framed in it. If the frame is jagged or frayed… the picture becomes distorted by the distraction of the frame. If the frame is strong and steady and supports all it holds without breaking? The picture can be seen much clearer, yes?

I’m still ruminating over it… hoping to write about it soon. Barely stepping back into life just yet. Well, not stepping at all. BUT- it’s all in perspective. 🙂

    • Oh, perspective is a good one. Sometimes life is about how we choose to see it. It is amazing the difference in watching two different people deal with the same thing. It can be so vastly different because of their perspective.

Oh, you poor thing. What a rough season you have had. I pray that your friend is…. I don’t even know how to end that sentence. I know it must be so painful for her. It is something we must walk through. There is no going around it. I pray that God will hold her in His arms and take her by the hand as they walk through it together. Sending prayers, hugs, and love. <3

  5. Hi Topaz! It is hard to narrow down to one word, isn’t it? But I do like your choice of ‘shine’. I have always liked shiny things…mirrors, sequins…they reflect light and catch the eye. I’m sure you want to reflect the light of Christ and then catch our eyes with your wisdom. Perfect!

Happy New Year to you and yours my friend. I hope we will travel this year on our paths, encouraging and supporting each other as we go!
    Ceil

    • It is, Ceil. Honestly. I usually have quite the group of words that I’ve chosen by the end of the year. Ha ha. There are just SO many good ones. Someone actually ordered that with the glitter, and I liked it so much that I added it to the shop. I do have a love affair with the word Shine, though. I watched a friend go through one of the toughest battles a couple of years ago, and she taught me the meaning of the word. Some people are just so absolutely beautiful. Their light is bright. After watching her, I knew the rest of us had no excuse. May we all shine a little brighter this year and be a bright light that encourages others.

Happy New Year to you, too, my beautiful friend. I look forward to growing our friendship over the new year! xo
